Hey! Nov.
5, 2012
Well we had a very eventful/interesting week. I had my
Birthday, the Hurricane, Mischief Night, Halloween, and my 1 year mark. All in
the same week! We also had double Halloweens, because they rescheduled it
because of the storm. So we had to stay in a lot this week. Luckily the storm
did not affect us too much. There was just a lot of rain and strong winds.
There were a lot of branches and leaves everywhere, and downed trees and power
lines. We also were lucky enough not to lose our power. My birthday was good,
we had cake. And I opened the package from you guys, along with cards that
friends and family sent me. So we were in all day because of the Storm on
Monday. Tuesday we stayed in until 12. Then we had to go back in at 6 because
it's mischief night. I guess they do crazy stuff here the night before Halloween.
Wednesday - We mostly had a normal day, we visited people to check up on them
after the storm. We also got our hot water back that day. We hadn’t had
hot water since Saturday for some reason. Then since it was Halloween we had to
go in at 6. Thursday - We had Zone Training. That night we went over to Sister Morgan’s
house for dinner. She is the R.S. President here. It takes an hour on buses to
get to her house. Isn’t that crazy! It would probably take like 15 minutes in a
car. Friday - I got my free library card here in Philly. Did a bunch of stop
by's (we do a ton of those, and usually people aren't home) Later we taught
Rueben, not sure if I told you about him. But he's an old homeless blind guy.
So we went and picked him up at shelter he's at and brought him to the
church for a lesson. He has a baptism date right now. But he's a little
"off" so were not sure if it's going to work out. He's kind of hard
to teach. But he came to church last Sunday. After him we stopped by Akeem, one
of our investigators. He's a college student, about my age. He's really cool,
he has to write a 6 page paper on the proof of God. So we helped him out with
that a little. He's got a lot of potential, and he came to church this Sunday
and really enjoyed the testimonies. Oh and Friday was my one year mark!!!! YAY.
Saturday - we taught a Muslim guy, which was interesting. We kind of explained
our religions to each other, which we kind of have similar beliefs or main
points. They have a prophet and another book, just like we have Joseph Smith
and another book. But he is really set in his religion and he completely
believes it’s true just like we are totally sure of our church. Sunday - We had
missionary coordination in the morning with the other set of Missionaries Elder
Taylor and Elder Potesio and one of our ward missionaries. Then we had PEC.
Almost everyone in PEC has their laptop or iPads out, and I can be just as cool
as them and have my iTouch out with our Ward directory on it ;) After our
meetings we went and picked up Akeem (when we say picked up, I mean we walked
to his house and walked with him to the church.) We get everywhere by walking, taking
the subway or bus. Church was good. We found out that our Stake had been
assigned to help with cleanup efforts in a Northern NJ Stake. Sounds like most
of the stakes in this area were assigned to another area to help out. So every
ward has to have groups of 6-10 people go up and help every Saturday and
Sunday, Yup Sunday too. They will be gutting flooded houses etc. I guess. We’re
not sure if were allowed to help because that's out of our mission. After
church we did our usual stop by's. Then we dropped by Bishop's house to report
some stuff to him. He actually fed us dinner while we talked to him, so that
was cool.
I’m still getting used to the city, but I’m starting to get
the hang of it. The most confusing thing for me is the transportation system, like
what bus will take me where etc. And addresses and directions are so confusing
for me. Random fact, I will be getting on an airplane 1 year from today... ;)
Dawn Mass' Baptism is next Sunday!!!! And she asked me to give the talk on
Baptism!! YAY I can't wait! It's starting to get cold!! I started putting on
the layers and the coat this past week!
I can't believe Election Day is tomorrow!!! Can't wait to
find out who wins!! There are Obama posters EVERYWHERE here, it drives me
crazy. Everything else seems to be good. I got birthday packages from Zoe Mann
and Kyall Wolford!! I’m sending a package to Danny in Honduras today! He said
he wanted some American candy, and that he would bring me candy from Honduras
if I sent him some stuff.
Guess what if I had stayed in my last area, I wouldn’t have
had church yesterday. Guess why... Because they still didn’t have power up
there!!! They haven’t had power for a week! Crazy stuff. I’m super glad we didn’t
lose our power. The storm really didn’t affect us too much.
Well I gotta go!
Have a great week!
