Hey Everybody!
Guess what!? I've been on my mission for a MONTH! kind
of crazy huh? My perception of time is so weird here. The days seem
pretty long, sometimes by the end of the day I can barley remember what
we did or talked to that morning. Because we talk to all different people
and drive to all these different places. But the weeks do seem to go
fast. I've been here in NJ for almost 2 weeks now.
We have really nice members here in Medford. They are all really
friendly. Though we don't get to eat with them very often. We usually
only have one meal a week with a family. Except there aren't a lot of
members here.. so that makes sense.
We met with a lot of people this week. One thing I've learned out here,
is that nothing rarely goes how you expected it to go. This week we
expected to have 2 people with baptism dates. Well we had Zero.. haha.
One person would we think is suuuper ready to be baptized, canceled on
us! the other person just needs a little more time. but i'm sure
eventually they will both have a baptism date.. soon.
I Loved all of the pictures you sent me with the Philly sign. Keep em coming!
So
Wednesday, we didn't have like any appointments.. so we went to the
library so that my companion could set up his missionary Facebook page.
After that we decided to go tracting...ahhh. We knocked around an area,
and no one was interested. In fact they were all pretty rude. A lot of
people when they answer there door, act like they are annoyed that we
knocked. they ask us what do you want? or What? but in a rude way. Or
they will say: I'm good, I'm catholic... And i think in my head, are you
good? haha
Anyways we always laugh at people when we are walking away from their house. and say, If they only knew!
So
as we were out tracting we had a lady that let us talk to her for a
second. Well she was a born again christian... I didn't really know
anything about their religion. But lets just say they have unique
beliefs. :) She basically told us that she believes that she will NOT be
judged for her works and what she does here on earth. And that because
she believes in Christ that she will be saved, because he has done the
rest for us. We talked for like 20 mins on her porch and i was Freezing!
and we didn't have our Scriptures because, we were planning on just saying hi
to some less actives and handing out pass along cards. So I could pull
out my bible and kindly tell her that she is wrong :) But she brought up
the usual bible scriptures: the one in Revelation about not adding on
to the bible etc. We asked her if she knew much about our church and she
said, yea I know a lot about your church. And so we asked her what does
she know. She said that she doesn't have time to say everything she
knew. But we pushed her. She said she knew how we have a book that
Joseph Smith wrote ERRRR. and that we base our beliefs and religion on
the Book of Mormon and not the bible ERRR. Anyways basically everything she said
about our church was WRONG. So we explained about Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon. But the whole time she was just telling us how none of that matters
etc because we can't add on to the bible and how what she believes is
already enough so we don't need anything else. and by the end she
basically told us how she felt sorry for us. And ready for this?? She
told us that she would pray for us, that we would be able to find the
truth so that we can be saved. HAHA She said I know what I believe is
true, and I know that you guys think that what you guys believe is true.
And I told her I don't believe, I KNOW that it is true. But she
seemed pretty proud of her self. I was a little frustrated after that
and really cold.
Lets just say tracting is not very effective at all. But anytime that we
don't have something scheduled or something to do. That's kind of what we
turn to. And I'm not a huge fan of it.
But not everyone we talk to
is rude, luckily. Some people no matter what they believe are open to
talk about religion and are really nice to us. We will have people that
are smoking right in front off us on their porch or in their house but
will be open to talking about what we believe and what they believe.
We have District Meetings on Thursdays. And sometimes we go eat together
somewhere after. This week we went to a place called La Vita's. They
probably had the best pizza I've ever had! it was pretty good! We do A
LOT of planning and little eating :( I'm always hungry and can't wait to
get back to my apartment to eat.
We had Stake Conference yesterday in Cherry Hill, NJ. Vai Sikahema is in our Stake Presidency and he talked at the Conf.
They
take Stake Conference a lot more serious over here. At least it seems
like it. They have people out in the parking lot, telling you where to
park. They had head sets for translation. And they had a lot of people
there! Anyways it was good, they talked about temples. And shared a lot
of good stories about going to the temple with their family. We went and
watched the Church Christmas Devotional last night. It was pretty good.
Well I've got to go but. So far so good! I've met a lot of people here!
Still trying to get used to the Area. They have townships here instead of
cities. Or something like that. It doesn't make sense to me. A lot of
people put up lights and decorations for Christmas. And I've actually
seen a lot of nativity scenes in people's yards.
I love to hear from friends and family! So write me! Even just a quick note/letter is awesome!
Hope everyone has a good December.
Love, Elder Jensen
